The BPCL Kochi Refinery, embarked on its journey in 1966 with a capacity of 50,000 barrels per day. Formerly known as Cochin Refineries Limited, the refinery was originally established as a joint venture in collaboration with Phillips Petroleum Corporation, USA.

Bharat Petroleum Corp is planning to shut a 4.5 million metric ton-per-year (90,000 barrels per day) crude unit and some secondary units for 30 days at its Kochi refinery during September-October, Reuters claimed quoting a company executive said on Tuesday.

India's BPCL plans to expand refining capacity by 2028

As part of the plan, BPCL—the country's second-biggest fuel retailer—will increase the capacity of its 15.5-MMtpy Kochi refinery, situated in the southern state of Kerala, to 18 MMtpy. It will also boost the capacity of its 12-MMtpy Mumbai refinery to 16 MM tpy, Khanna said.

With an investment of Rs. 5,044 Crore, BPCL is set to establish a Polypropylene (PP) Unit at Kochi Refinery, responding to India's burgeoning demand for petrochemicals. This visionary project leverages the abundant Propylene feedstock at Kochi Refinery, marking a significant milestone in reshaping the petrochemical industry landscape.
